No it is not stupid. If this is the only way that you can communicate then so be it. If he is moving to another country you are going to have to get used to communicating through letters anyways so why not start now. Besides I am sure that he will be relieved to be hearing something other then crying coming from you. If you keep crying around him he is going to think that he is doing something wrong.
