Teaching 1st graders?

Errr, my best friend asked me to take over a 1st grade cl for one day every week for the next 4-5 weeks so he could make medical appointments. I'm doing things like Math and English and i want to know some good ways to teach kids things like word problems, adjectives, and then i check reading comprehensions. I have some rough ideas but maybe a little help/opinions would be nice
